What we burn today

Today, we mostly burn biofuels and recovered waste fuels.

In our five plants, we burn over 1 million tons of fuel per year. Below are the fuels we use and estimated consumption in 2010.

1. Forestry chippings
Residues from forest clearing, such as tree branches and tops, transported by road and rail from Sweden and by sea from the Baltic countries (600 000 tons/year).

2. Recovered wastewood
Discarded wood from building sites and creosote-impregnated wood that is transported by ship and truck from the Stockholm region, other parts of Sweden, Norway, Belgium and England (200 000 tons/year).

3. Fuel timber
Timber that is unsuitable for any other purpose than fuel. Transported by truck, ship and train from e.g. Sweden and the Baltic states. 100 000 tons chipped on site.

4. Recovered crushed waste materials
Office and industrial waste comprising paper, plastic and wood that is crushed, sieved and sorted from metals, sand and other contaminants and cannot be used for any other purpose. A utilisation that is supported by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and other bodies. The fuel is transported by truck mainly from the Stockholm region and from Norway (80 000 tons/year).

5. Recovered waste pellets
The same basic materials as in recovered crushed waste is further processed into pellets and imported by ship from Holland and Germany. Recovered waste pellets are classified as raw energy material in Holland and not as waste (78 000 tons/year).

6. Wood pellets
Made of by-products from sawmills the Baltic states and Finland (60 000 tons/year).

7. Peat
Decayed plants that have existed in great peat mosses for thousands of years. The largest volume of peat comes from Estonia, a smaller part from Sweden. Peat is delivered mainly by ship as peat briquettes or peat pellets. Within Sweden, peat is delivered as sods by truck (50 000 tons/year).

Other fuels
Tall pitch oil
, a bio-fuel produced during the paper pulp making process. Tall pitch oil is only burned when it is very cold. We also require fuel in order to fire several of these fuels and also when it is very cold. Oil comprises less than 5% of our fuel.
